Maybe find some races scattered about the calendar -- 5k, 4 mile, 8k, 5 mile -- that might keep you going?

Of course I have been so absolutely terrible about running for the past two or three years, really, really bad about maintaining a decent training schedule. Heck, not really even having anything that could be called a training schedule. There's a ten miler coming up at the end of this week that my daughter (she's a couple of years younger than you) decided she wanted to try. I have run it three or four times over the past dozen years or so and it is a well-organized race... but I just could not push myself to get into shape for it... so I finally decided the only thing to do was to sign up for the ten mile walk because I could not survive running ten miles.
