runDisney Changes

So this has been going around the blogosphere for the last week or so, but I wanted to add my 2 cents to the changes to runDisney Marathon Weekend for 2014.

I think the biggest change is the addition of a 10k and the creation of the Dopey Challenge.  Disney is known for its Goofy Challenge – running the half on Saturday and the full on Sunday gets you an additional medal shaped like Goofy – but many runners did an unofficial Dopey challenge by also doing the 5k on Friday.

runDisney decided to one up us all.  I’m betting this had to do with the success of the Dopey Challenge over at Disneyland (10k + half).  They’ve added a 10k to Marathon Weekend!  That means that there’s a 5k on Thursday, a 10k on Friday, a half on Saturday and a full on Sunday.  And if you run them all, you are Dopey and get the Dopey Challenge Medal (and the Goofy Challenge medal and the medals for all four races of course).  Intense.

I’m not going Goofy or Dopey this year.  No, I’m running the marathon again in 2014, but I also signed up for the 10k.  Why? Because it’s on my birthday!

Other changes?

Fewer runners allowed to register, meaning a less crowded course.  I didn’t have trouble with this for the marathon, but definitely did for the Princess Half.  Glad to see this happening.

Requirement of proof of time for all runners and no moving corrals on at the Expo.  I like this idea, but it remains to be seen how it will all work out.

More corrals.  HOORAY!

Women’s cut tech shirts.  Not something I needed, but something that I’m glad to see.

So there you have it.  I can’t wait to see what the medals look like for all of these races.

  1. I am really hoping that if I do a WDW event again it’s less crowded than the Princess..there were parts in the course we were forced to walk since there were so many people and it just bottlenecked. I wish I was able to do more runDisney, maybe I’ll get to sign up!

  2. Shannyn, this year’s Princess was the most crowded Disney race I have ever run. Seeing as they reduced the numbers for Marathon weekend AND created more corrals, I’m hoping the same happens for Princess to ease the course congestion.
