Congratulations on your running... and on the write-ups you posted for the 10 miler and the 5k.

I'm afraid that I have not been running due to my achilles tendon (plus a bone spur right next to the tendon). The moon boot I was wearing back in Dec & Jan seemed to work, but it was only a temporary fix and the problem returned -- and in a more painful and limiting way -- so I am scheduled for surgery on my right heel to correct the problem.

My daughter and I enjoy running together and racing together and we have not been able to do that this year. We had both signed up for the James Joyce Ramble, a very nice 10k (in Dedham, a town outside Boston) that has actors in period costume along the race course reading aloud from the works of James Joyce. She ran the race but my heel kept me from running, although I cheered and took pictures.

The doctor says minimum of 8 to 12 weeks of no running after surgery, which eliminates a big chunk of summer... and my daughter & her boy friend are moving to Connecticut this summer (where he is going to law school), so our opportunities for running and racing together are going to be much more limited.

Yes, please dial back a bit and let your knee recover. An injury can mess up your plans for weeks and weeks. (I'll be seeing my podiatrist on Tuesday to find out if I need surgery on my heel or if I can begin to think about starting running again anytime soon. I'm going nuts!)

I recently found your blog by searching for information on the PMF program. I realized we have a lot in common. I'm looking forward to following your blog!

I take the assessment Jan 11th. I'm freaking out!

Good luck with your running goals!

Yes, I also see the movie as a triumph for Ralphie. (And it is my 2nd favorite holiday movie, right after It's a Wonderful Life.)

I identified with Ralphie. I knew the same kind of childhood. When I was in college I loved to listen to Jean Shepard on the radio, telling stories, many of which were similar childhood stories. It seemed to me as if he were telling stories that could have been set in my neighborhood during my 1940s childhood (even though he was more than twenty years older than me).

I agree on the sad, but Ralphie does get his gun in the end, AND he gets to pound the crap outta Scut Farkus. So he does have the occasional moment of good in there too.

I have to agree with you on A Christmas Story. It's cute every once in a while but I have relatives who leave it on all day on Christmas. The story about the decoder is probably one of the saddest parts of the film. :(

Good article. Being alone for the holidays once or twice in your life is ok, it might even be fun, but if it becomes a recurring theme in your life, it can be very painful.

If you do not have the love and support of a healthy extended family, it is crucial to connect with people who care about you and who need & want your company as much as you them. Whether you have no family or are simply missing a vital relationship in your extended family circle, a more complete extended family will provide you with a more powerful support system.

Try CreatingExtendedFamilies.com It matches adults platonically to create surrogate extended family relationships.

Less than three months to your marathon... I am really damned impressed. Didn't you start running when you were in law school? A 5k or a 5 miler on campus?

Hi! I'm a fellow Holidailies participant and a former CCS member. Glad to hear the concerts went well yesterday. I miss singing with the CCS. (But not the 28-mile drive to and from the Cathedral. That was killing me.) Good luck with today's concert!

Agreed. Spending the holidays with friends could never be the same as with family. Now that I'm married I am with my in-laws for half of the holidays... they are fine people... but being with my own family is my favorite!
