{"id":1008,"date":"2012-12-04T08:00:34","date_gmt":"2012-12-04T13:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=1008"},"modified":"2012-11-29T15:25:27","modified_gmt":"2012-11-29T20:25:27","slug":"when-your-body-says-no","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/04\/when-your-body-says-no\/","title":{"rendered":"When your body says no"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are a lot of sayings out there about how running is mind over matter and how you can&#8217;t give up when your mind gives out.\u00a0 You have to power through doubt and uncertainty.\u00a0 You have to do what you think you can&#8217;t do.<\/p>\n<p>But what about when your body is uncertain?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not talking about when you&#8217;re sore or injured &#8211; sometimes there are times when your body absolutely needs rest.\u00a0 But what about those times that you just aren&#8217;t feeling it?\u00a0 When you are just completely sluggish and can&#8217;t get moving?<\/p>\n<p>It happens to the best of us.\u00a0 It can happen due to over-training or less-than-ideal nutrition or poor sleep or any number of reasons.\u00a0 Sometimes your body just isn&#8217;t into it.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been going through a bit of this lately, and I think it&#8217;s a combination of the above reasons.\u00a0 My diet needs to be better, I need to sleep more, and I&#8217;ve been training quite a bit.\u00a0 So how am I dealing with this?<\/p>\n<p>Well, one thing I&#8217;ve done is slightly trim back my training program.\u00a0 My plan has called for quite a few mid-week ten mile runs.\u00a0 Since I run before work, that means getting up incredibly early.\u00a0 Some days, I know it&#8217;s possible.\u00a0 Some days, I know it&#8217;s not going to happen.\u00a0 But rather than skip the run, I drop it back to 6 miles or so.\u00a0 That helps quite a bit.\u00a0 I freely admit that I have also missed more workouts than I like.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been getting in the running, but not necessarily the cross-training I need.<\/p>\n<p>What I&#8217;m trying to not do is just plan to skip a workout all together.\u00a0 And if I do, I try to skip the &#8220;easiest&#8221; workout of the week.\u00a0 So if I have a 4 mile run on Tuesday and an 8 mile run on Thursday and I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;m going to make it through them both, maybe I&#8217;ll rest on Tuesday and run 8 on Wednesday and then do something different on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Some days though, I just find myself turning off the alarm and going back to sleep unplanned.\u00a0 As long as I don&#8217;t do it all of the time, I tell myself it&#8217;s okay.\u00a0 Sometimes you just need rest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are a lot of sayings out there about how running is mind over matter and how you can&#8217;t give up when your mind gives out.\u00a0 You have to power through doubt and uncertainty.\u00a0 You have to do what you think you can&#8217;t do.
