{"id":1079,"date":"2012-12-13T08:00:18","date_gmt":"2012-12-13T13:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=1079"},"modified":"2012-12-13T08:00:41","modified_gmt":"2012-12-13T13:00:41","slug":"pre-race-meals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/13\/pre-race-meals\/","title":{"rendered":"Pre-Race Meals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People always ask for advice on what to eat the night before a race.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been running races for a few years, and through trial and error, have discovered what works well for me on the evening before a race.\u00a0 Of course, just because it works for me doesn&#8217;t mean that it will work for you.<\/p>\n<p>First, I should dispel a myth &#8211; carb loading.\u00a0 Carb loading is generally a good idea, but eating a big meal of pasta the night before the race isn&#8217;t going to do it.\u00a0 You need to be increasing your carb intake throughout the week or so leading up to your race.<\/p>\n<p>Does that mean you shouldn&#8217;t have pasta the night before a race?\u00a0 Not at all!\u00a0 If you like pasta and know that your stomach can handle it, then by all means, go for it!\u00a0 I have actually discovered that my body really likes gnocchi before a race, but I&#8217;m careful to avoid heavy cream sauces.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m lucky in that I can eat a lot of things before a race.<\/p>\n<p>A friend of mine avoids the pasta and goes for something like steak and a baked potato.\u00a0 Since I eat red meat so rarely, this isn&#8217;t a route I would take, but I could definitely do chicken and a baked potato.<\/p>\n<p>I also really like pizza the night before a race.\u00a0\u00a0 But in general, I really like pizza.<\/p>\n<p>What doesn&#8217;t work for me?\u00a0 I can&#8217;t eat too late, that&#8217;s a given.\u00a0 I like to be eating dinner around 5pm the night before a race.\u00a0 I also have to be careful to not eat too much.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve done that before and spent the entire race feeling very heavy.\u00a0 Not sick, just heavy and sluggish.\u00a0 That&#8217;s probably something everyone should be cautious about.<\/p>\n<p>So it is a lot of trial and error.\u00a0 But my recommendation is always to not eat something that&#8217;s not part of your normal diet.\u00a0 If you normally eat low carb, don&#8217;t suddenly load up on pasta.\u00a0 And simple is always better.<\/p>\n<p>And practice!\u00a0 The night before a long run, eat something different and see how you feel the next day.\u00a0 Maybe you&#8217;ll feel great, maybe you&#8217;ll struggle, but either way, you will have learned something.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People always ask for advice on what to eat the night before a race.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been running races for a few years, and through trial and error, have discovered what works well for me on the evening before a race.\u00a0 Of course, just because it works for me doesn&#8217;t mean that it will work for [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_is_tweetstorm":false,"jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","enabled":false}}},"categories":[42],"tags":[],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.7 -
