{"id":1775,"date":"2013-05-08T08:00:49","date_gmt":"2013-05-08T12:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=1775"},"modified":"2013-05-07T08:17:36","modified_gmt":"2013-05-07T12:17:36","slug":"race-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/08\/race-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Race Costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"$5700\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/85473033@N00\/362201147\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"$5700\" alt=\"$5700\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/144\/362201147_8bd2ef0dd8.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><small><br \/>\n<a title=\"Attribution License\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0; padding: 0;\" title=\"Creative Commons License\" alt=\"Creative Commons License\" src=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/compfight\/images\/cc.png\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <a title=\"Andrew Magill\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/85473033@N00\/362201147\/\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Magill<\/a> via <a title=\"Compfight\" href=\"http:\/\/www.compfight.com\/\">Compfight<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>People often ask me how I can afford to do so many races.\u00a0 The answer is good budgeting and sacrificing in other areas.<\/p>\n<p>But that got me to thinking what an average race costs me.\u00a0 Not a runDisney race &#8211; those are expensive.\u00a0 Fun, but expensive.\u00a0\u00a0 So I decided to track my costs for my most recent half marathon, the Frederick Running Festival Half Marathon.<\/p>\n<p>Frederick is a &#8220;local-ish&#8221; race.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about an hour drive, but Jen and I opted to spend the night there the night before in order to do packet pickup and not have to stress the morning of the race.<\/p>\n<p>So what did I spend money on?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Race registration &#8211; <strong>$65.00<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Mileage &#8211; <strong>$14.00<\/strong> (calculated using an online fuel cost estimator)<\/li>\n<li>Hotel &#8211; <strong>$41.42<\/strong> (split with Jen and Melissa)<\/li>\n<li>Parking for lunch and shopping &#8211; <strong>$1.00<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Lunch &#8211; <strong>$6.75<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Shopping in Downtown Frederick &#8211; <strong>$66.15<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/loveoliveoilvinegar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, where I bought for myself and some gifts)<\/li>\n<li>Dinner &#8211; <strong>$23.00 <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Snacks and drinks for the drive home (I opted out of breakfast because I wasn&#8217;t feeling 100%) &#8211; <strong>$8.69<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So the &#8220;requireds&#8221; (registration, mileage, and hotel) cost me <strong>$120.42.\u00a0 <\/strong>In total, I spent <strong>$226.01<\/strong>.\u00a0 Considering that over $66 of that was on relatively unrelated shopping (meaning it wasn&#8217;t at an expo, it was just at a shop that I love that happens to be in that city), that&#8217;s not so bad at all.<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s clearly not something that can happen all the time.\u00a0 I&#8217;d say this race falls in the mid-point of race costs.\u00a0 My previous half, Rock &#8216;n&#8217; Roll DC cost significantly less because I could sleep in my own bed, less than 10 miles from the start.\u00a0 Races involving air travel cost significantly more.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all about balance.\u00a0 Some people think I&#8217;m crazy, but this is where I choose to spend my money.\u00a0 Some people love fancy shoes or clothes or home accessories or electronics.\u00a0 I like running.<\/p>\n<p>It does make me wonder what I spend on running in a year.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s a calculation I want to do!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andrew Magill via Compfight People often ask me how I can afford to do so many races.\u00a0 The answer is good budgeting and sacrificing in other areas.
