{"id":2954,"date":"2014-08-28T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=2954"},"modified":"2014-08-26T18:21:59","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T22:21:59","slug":"sprint-triathlon-pr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/28\/sprint-triathlon-pr\/","title":{"rendered":"Sprint Triathlon PR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I posted about my <a title=\"Race Report \u2013 2014 Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon\" href=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/19\/race-report-2014-iron-girl-columbia-triathlon\/\" target=\"_blank\">most recent triathlon<\/a>, I mentioned that it was a course PR. \u00a0 Someone asked me if it was my sprint PR as well. \u00a0And the answer is&#8230; well, not really. \u00a0Triathlon PRs, primarily at the sprint distance, are a different animal and hard to compare.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, courses are different. \u00a0You can have hilly and flat sprint triathlons. \u00a0You can have pool swims, swims in a calm lake, swims in a moving river, or swims in the ocean. \u00a0But the terrain of the course of a running race varies too.<\/p>\n<p>The big difference that a lot of people miss is that the sprint distance isn&#8217;t always standardized. \u00a0From what I understand, the &#8220;standard&#8221; sprint distance is approximately a 750m swim, 12.4 mile bike, and 5k run.<\/p>\n<p>How does that compare to my triathlons this year?<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Race Report \u2013 Dragonfly Heart Triathlon\" href=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/16\/race-report-dragonfly-heart-triathlon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dragonfly Heart<\/a> &#8211; 400m swim, 10 mile bike, 2 mile run<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Race Report: 2014 Fort Ritchie Sprint Triathlon\" href=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/04\/race-report-2014-fort-ritchie-sprint-triathlon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Ritchie<\/a> &#8211; 750m swim, 15 mile bike, 5k run<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Race Report \u2013 2014 Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon\" href=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/19\/race-report-2014-iron-girl-columbia-triathlon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Iron Girl Columbia<\/a> &#8211; 1000m swim, 16 mile bike, 3.3 mile run<\/p>\n<p>So none of them fall into the standard distance (though Fort Ritchie is close). \u00a0And because of the variations in distances, I can&#8217;t really compare them. \u00a0Each race is distinctly different, not only because of terrain but because of distance. \u00a0It&#8217;s like comparing a 5k race and a 5 mile\u00a0race and saying which one is your PR.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, if you ask me today what my sprint triathlon PR is, I will just shrug.<\/p>\n<p>The difference in distances is also important to note when you&#8217;re signing up for a race. \u00a0Make sure you check out those distances before you sign up for a sprint. \u00a0Iron Girl Columbia had a swim that was more than twice the distance of Dragonfly Heart, and both are billed as sprint races. \u00a0A number of women during Iron Girl Columbia seemed shocked at how far the swim really was and some complained that it was mismeasured. \u00a0Based on my swim time, I&#8217;d say it was just fine. \u00a0They just hadn&#8217;t realized that sprint distance swims aren&#8217;t all the same.<\/p>\n<p>I like the variation in distances. \u00a0Each race is challenging in a different way. \u00a0But it&#8217;s good to know what I&#8217;m up against when I reach the start line.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I posted about my most recent triathlon, I mentioned that it was a course PR. \u00a0 Someone asked me if it was my sprint PR as well. \u00a0And the answer is&#8230; well, not really. \u00a0Triathlon PRs, primarily at the sprint distance, are a different animal and hard to compare.
