{"id":3356,"date":"2015-02-06T09:03:44","date_gmt":"2015-02-06T14:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=3356"},"modified":"2015-02-06T09:03:44","modified_gmt":"2015-02-06T14:03:44","slug":"handle-long-treadmill-runs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/06\/handle-long-treadmill-runs\/","title":{"rendered":"How I handle long treadmill runs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/10895344_332209036986865_823329567_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3357 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/10895344_332209036986865_823329567_n-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"10895344_332209036986865_823329567_n\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/10895344_332209036986865_823329567_n-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/10895344_332209036986865_823329567_n-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/10895344_332209036986865_823329567_n.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Last night, I ran ten miles on my treadmill.\u00a0 I got a lot of comments from people about how I was crazy and how they could never do ten miles on a treadmill.<\/p>\n<p>I really didn&#8217;t have another option.\u00a0 If I wanted to get the workout in, I had to do it on the treadmill.\u00a0 I was at the office during all of the daylight hours and I am certainly not running alone in the dark.\u00a0 I know people do it, but I just wouldn&#8217;t feel safe.\u00a0 Plus it&#8217;s cold out.\u00a0 Cold and dark sounds absolutely miserable.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve learned a couple of tricks to get me through a long treadmill workout.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0 Cover up the screen!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I actually cover my treadmill screen on a lot of my treadmill runs.\u00a0 I just toss a towel over top so I can&#8217;t see the distance slowly ticking away.\u00a0 Because I run intervals, I cover the screen so that I can see the speed (so I don&#8217;t inadvertently bump up the speed too high or too low) and then hide the rest.\u00a0 It makes the miles go much faster when I&#8217;m not constantly checking.\u00a0 How do I know I&#8217;m done?\u00a0 Well, I have a general idea of how much time I&#8217;ve got to spend on the treadmill, so I glance at the number occasionally and when I&#8217;m in the last mile, ditch the towel so I can see the last mile tick away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 Distract your brain!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some people argue that you should focus on your workout and only your workout.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not going to happen for me.\u00a0 So I find something else to entertain my brain while my body works.\u00a0 I know some people like music or podcasts, and I do listen to podcasts while I&#8217;m outside running (because I can still hear all the ambient noise around me), but while I&#8217;m on my treadmill, I have the tv on.<\/p>\n<p>The trick that I have discovered is to make sure that I have something that I really want to watch ready to go.\u00a0 Since I watch most of my tv on Hulu Plus now that I cut the cord, sometimes that means &#8220;saving&#8221; good shows for a hard run.\u00a0 Not only does it keep me occupied, it&#8217;s incentive to get on the treadmill if I know I can watch the latest episode of Parks &amp; Recreation while I run.<\/p>\n<p>When I have a really long run, sometimes I like to queue up a movie on Netflix.\u00a0 Since movies are longer than tv shows, I don&#8217;t notice the passage of time quite as much.\u00a0 And sometimes, I go back and forth.\u00a0 Nope, this movie isn&#8217;t doing it for me.\u00a0 Switch to a tv show.\u00a0 Whatever keeps me going.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0 Brag!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last night, I posted before and after my workout.\u00a0 That meant that when I started, I had to finish the whole workout or risk admitting to the world (because the whole world follows me on Twitter) that I hadn&#8217;t completed the workout.\u00a0 So I posted before and after.\u00a0 It&#8217;s added motivation.<\/p>\n<p>Now, what constitutes a long treadmill run varies for everyone.\u00a0 Some people love their treadmill and will happily run 20 miles on it.\u00a0 Others can&#8217;t handle anything more than five.\u00a0 But sometimes, the treadmill is the best option, and you have to do whatever you can to make that workout happen.<\/p>\n<p>How do you get through long treadmill workouts?\u00a0 What&#8217;s the longest treadmill run you&#8217;ve ever done?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night, I ran ten miles on my treadmill.\u00a0 I got a lot of comments from people about how I was crazy and how they could never do ten miles on a treadmill.
