{"id":3730,"date":"2015-07-21T09:00:29","date_gmt":"2015-07-21T13:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=3730"},"modified":"2015-07-21T08:33:04","modified_gmt":"2015-07-21T12:33:04","slug":"iron-girl-columbia-tips-and-tricks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/21\/iron-girl-columbia-tips-and-tricks\/","title":{"rendered":"Iron Girl Columbia Tips and Tricks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IG-Columbia-tri-10th.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3731 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IG-Columbia-tri-10th.jpg\" alt=\"IG-Columbia-tri-10th\" width=\"586\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IG-Columbia-tri-10th.jpg 586w, http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IG-Columbia-tri-10th-300x115.jpg 300w, http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IG-Columbia-tri-10th-500x192.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve had a lot of hits to my site coming from people looking for information about Iron Girl Columbia.\u00a0 The race is in less than a month (August 16th) and <a href=\"http:\/\/ulmanfund.org\/irongirl\/\" target=\"_blank\">you can sign up<\/a> until Friday, so if you&#8217;re on the fence, now is the time!<\/p>\n<p>I am racing again this year and it will be my third year.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve learned a lot since my first Iron Girl Columbia (which was only my second triathlon and significantly longer than my first tri).\u00a0 I, of course, blogged about both years:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/19\/race-recap-iron-girl-columbia-triathlon\/\" target=\"_blank\">2013 Iron Girl Columbia<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/19\/race-report-2014-iron-girl-columbia-triathlon\/\" target=\"_blank\">2014 Iron Girl Columbia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I really like this race.\u00a0 Obviously, since I&#8217;m coming back for a third year.\u00a0 I have a soft spot in my heart for it since it was my first big race (my first tri was a beginner race) and because it supports the Ulman Cancer Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I won&#8217;t lie.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a super easy race.\u00a0 The course is challenging, but you can definitely do it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Transition<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At Iron Girl Columbia, you have to rack your bike the day before.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t worry, there are people out there with your bike all night so it won&#8217;t get lonely.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t put out the rest of your gear until race morning, so don&#8217;t think you have to leave your running shoes out all night.\u00a0 Those can stay with you til race morning.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions in transition, just ask.\u00a0 There are plenty of experienced racers at this race who are happy to help, and the volunteers are phenomenal as well.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of people in this race.\u00a0 Last year, there were over 1000 racers.\u00a0 So transition can seem big.\u00a0 Just remember where your bike is.\u00a0 Take a look at transition.\u00a0 Where do you come in from the swim (hint, it&#8217;s the side near the lake)?\u00a0 When you run in from the water, which way will you go to your bike?\u00a0 How will you get your bike out (hint, it&#8217;s up the hill)?\u00a0 And so on and so forth.\u00a0 Some people will say to tie a balloon where your bike is racked &#8211; that isn&#8217;t allowed at this race, or at most races.\u00a0 So you have to figure out another way to remember.\u00a0 Brightly colored transition towels help.\u00a0 One year, I was racked near a tree, so that was my landmark.\u00a0 Another year, I was five rows in.\u00a0 Worst case, the bikes are racked by race number, so take a look at the number written on your arm and find your spot that way.<\/p>\n<p>The day before the race, when you rack your bike, I recommend walking transition, getting an idea of what you will be doing on race morning.\u00a0 Coming in here from the swim, out there for the bike, back in from the bike, and then out this way to the run.\u00a0 The visualization always helps me.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Swim<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last year, UCF instituted a new type of start known as a Time Trial start.\u00a0 What this means is that you go into the water two-by-two instead of each wave starting in a mass start.\u00a0 This helps spread out the people and for a lot of racers, takes away some of the stress of the mass start.\u00a0 Unfortunately, this means you can&#8217;t get in the water to warm up before the race.<\/p>\n<p>What I did last year, that I think helped, was that I dumped a bunch of cold water on my head and down my kit before the race.\u00a0 It may have looked ridiculous, but then getting into the water wasn&#8217;t a shock to my system.<\/p>\n<p>Some people will tell you that Centennial Lake is gross.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not the clearest of lakes, that&#8217;s for sure, but it&#8217;s also not the grossest water I&#8217;ve been in for a triathlon.\u00a0 Besides, you&#8217;re just going to go get sweaty on the bike and the run.\u00a0 Who cares!<\/p>\n<p>This swim is probably the best supported swim I&#8217;ve seen.\u00a0 There are so many kayakers out in the water ready to help anyone who needs it.\u00a0 If you need to stop for any reason, just grab onto a kayak.\u00a0 Maybe you need to adjust your goggles, or you&#8217;re coughing on some water or maybe you just need a moment to get out of your head.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all okay.\u00a0 And don&#8217;t worry &#8211; the more races you do, the less you&#8217;ll need it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Bike<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Columbia is hilly.\u00a0 If you can, go ride the bike course before the race.\u00a0 Princeton Sports does course previews every Sunday morning.\u00a0 Right now, they&#8217;re actually riding the old Iron Girl course, which is similar and gives you a good taste of Columbia hills, but I believe as the race gets closer, they will start doing the current course.\u00a0 You can also go out without a big group, but don&#8217;t go alone.\u00a0 And be careful on Route 40.\u00a0 Race day will be fine, but every other day, it&#8217;s all open to traffic, as most roads are.<\/p>\n<p>If nothing else, drive the course before the race.\u00a0 Get an idea of the course.\u00a0 The hills aren&#8217;t too bad.\u00a0 Worst case, you get off your bike and walk.\u00a0 My first year, I saw a girl running her bike up a hill.\u00a0 More power to her.\u00a0 And besides, what goes up must come down.\u00a0 Enjoy the speed on those downhills!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Run<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remember those hills?\u00a0 Yeah, they didn&#8217;t go away.\u00a0 There&#8217;s one glorious hill known as Gatorade Hill, and you get to go up it twice.\u00a0 But you can do it.\u00a0 And the best part is the spectators at this race.\u00a0 There are so many people out there cheering you on.\u00a0 Enjoy the run!\u00a0 You&#8217;ve made it, and you&#8217;re going to have an awesome finish!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve had a lot of hits to my site coming from people looking for information about Iron Girl Columbia.\u00a0 The race is in less than a month (August 16th) and you can sign up until Friday, so if you&#8217;re on the fence, now is the time!
