{"id":4425,"date":"2016-05-02T09:14:07","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T13:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=4425"},"modified":"2016-05-02T09:14:07","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T13:14:07","slug":"4425","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2016\/05\/02\/4425\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Race&#8221; Report &#8211; Practice Duathlon"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_4426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4426\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/bicycle_1462191845.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4426\" src=\"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/bicycle_1462191845.jpg\" alt=\"josemiguels \/ Pixabay\" width=\"150\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/users\/josemiguels\/\">josemiguels<\/a> \/ Pixabay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Saturday morning, I did a practice race put on by DC Tri.\u00a0 Just an easy duathlon.\u00a0 Or so I was led to believe.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s be honest, racing is never easy.\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t matter if it&#8217;s a small time practice or a big time race.<\/p>\n<p>But this one was especially tough because I felt like I was in my head the whole time.<\/p>\n<p>The race was a 1.5 mile run, a 14 or 21 mile bike (2 or 3 loops) and a 5k run.\u00a0 It was a cold, gloomy day, though probably the only day in a string of many where it wasn&#8217;t raining in the morning.\u00a0 I was glad it was a du and not a tri, that&#8217;s for sure.\u00a0\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t count, but I&#8217;d say there were about 20 people participating, and what I didn&#8217;t realize was just how few were actually doing the longer distance.<\/p>\n<p>The run set off and I was quickly left in the dust.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a slow runner.\u00a0 It&#8217;s how I roll.\u00a0 I know that and I accept it.\u00a0 (And my run wasn&#8217;t that slow &#8211; a 12:10 mile pace, which for me is flying.)\u00a0 So I was on the bike long after everyone else. My goal was to pick off cyclists.<\/p>\n<p>And I did.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not fast on the bike, but I&#8217;m working on it.\u00a0 And what helps me is that I&#8217;m a decent climber.\u00a0 Again, not fast, but I&#8217;m not likely to drop my chain or have to weave back and forth to get up the hill.\u00a0 And this loop sure had hills.\u00a0 Of course, it&#8217;s a loop,\u00a0 so what goes up must come down.\u00a0 There was a significant downhill that freaked me out each time I rode it.\u00a0 My Garmin data says that I hit almost 40mph on it, which explains why I never made it down in full aero.\u00a0 By the last bit, I had to get out of aero to get my body more stabilized because I was freaked out by the speed.\u00a0 40mph is stupidly fast.\u00a0 Fun, but terrifying.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, all but one of the people I passed on my bike were only doing the 14 miles, so I was way behind by the time I got to the run and thought I was actually last.\u00a0 Turns out one other girl was doing the 21, but I didn&#8217;t see her til I was halfway through the run.<\/p>\n<p>I was definitely frustrated with myself on the run and instead of focusing on how well I was doing, I just kept thinking about how poorly I felt about my performance, which is not the way to go.\u00a0 But I just kept pushing and finished the 5k at a 13:04 pace.\u00a0 Not so bad after all.\u00a0 And the other girl caught me and we ran it in together at the end, which felt pretty awesome.\u00a0 Technically one of us was last, but I don&#8217;t care to look at the scoring to see which one of us it was.\u00a0 It was really a photo finish for sure.<\/p>\n<p>By the end, I felt a bit better about myself.\u00a0 And I found a sweet new cycling route.\u00a0 That was a good workout and I want to go back to the park for workouts.\u00a0 It&#8217;s nice to not be dealing with stoplights and stop signs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday morning, I did a practice race put on by DC Tri.\u00a0 Just an easy duathlon.\u00a0 Or so I was led to believe.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s be honest, racing is never easy.\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t matter if it&#8217;s a small time practice or a big time race.
