{"id":812,"date":"2012-10-10T08:00:20","date_gmt":"2012-10-10T12:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=812"},"modified":"2012-10-05T12:11:09","modified_gmt":"2012-10-05T16:11:09","slug":"listen-to-your-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/10\/listen-to-your-body\/","title":{"rendered":"Listen To Your Body"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some of my friends are amazed when they find out that I get up at 4:30 (or earlier) to run during the week.\u00a0 They comment that they could never convince themselves to get out of bed.\u00a0 I admit, it&#8217;s tough, but it feels amazing when you do it.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t always want to get out of bed, especially on the days when the alarm goes off and there is a soft, warm cat curled up next to me.\u00a0 (His response to the alarm is usually to moan and burrow into the blankets.)\u00a0 But I get up and workout just the same.<\/p>\n<p>But every so often, there comes a day when my body truly doesn&#8217;t want to get out of bed.\u00a0 So I do a quick mental survey.\u00a0 Am I just tired?\u00a0 How have I been feeling?\u00a0 Am I getting sick?\u00a0 Unless there are obvious signs I&#8217;m getting sick (sore throat, headache), I get out of bed and get dressed anyway.\u00a0 I might as well give the workout a shot.\u00a0 Worst case, I get a couple of minutes in and realize it&#8217;s not happening and give up.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, it&#8217;s hard to listen to your body.\u00a0 We are so often training for a specific race.\u00a0 I&#8217;m currently a few weeks into a training plan that takes me into January.\u00a0 I planned it so that there is some padding in case I miss a long run due to injury or illness, but making the decision to skip what I consider a critical run in my training can be difficult.<\/p>\n<p>When my runner&#8217;s knee flared up a few months ago, I had to convince myself that yes, rest was the best option.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t matter that I needed to train.\u00a0 If my knee was sore, I wouldn&#8217;t be able to race at all.\u00a0 It was better to go into the race slightly under-trained than to risk injury.<\/p>\n<p>But I admit, even I don&#8217;t always make the best decisions.\u00a0\u00a0 A few weeks ago, my quad was achy.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t sure what I had done, but it hurt.\u00a0 But I had a 13 mile training run on the schedule and had plans to run with friends.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want to miss this run.\u00a0 So I rested, I put on my compression tights, and I hoped for the best.\u00a0 Luckily, it turns out the compression was just what I needed and I felt great after the run.\u00a0 But it certainly wasn&#8217;t the smartest decision.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s tough to determine when to workout and when to listen to your body and take an unscheduled rest day.\u00a0 When you can&#8217;t decide, my best tip is to just give it a shot.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll know within a few minutes whether or not you can finish the workout.\u00a0 And if you can, you will feel much better knowing that you did something good for your body.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some of my friends are amazed when they find out that I get up at 4:30 (or earlier) to run during the week.\u00a0 They comment that they could never convince themselves to get out of bed.\u00a0 I admit, it&#8217;s tough, but it feels amazing when you do it.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t always want to get out [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_is_tweetstorm":false,"jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","enabled":false}}},"categories":[41],"tags":[110,125],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.7 -
