{"id":832,"date":"2012-10-11T08:00:20","date_gmt":"2012-10-11T12:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=832"},"modified":"2012-10-06T13:21:23","modified_gmt":"2012-10-06T17:21:23","slug":"running-and-weight-gain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/11\/running-and-weight-gain\/","title":{"rendered":"Running and Weight Gain?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I took up running to lose weight.<\/p>\n<p>I have not lost weight.\u00a0 In fact, I have gained weight.\u00a0 Some of this is due to age, lifestyle, and genetics, but some of it is my own fault.<\/p>\n<p>Gaining weight while training for a race isn&#8217;t uncommon, but it&#8217;s not inevitable.\u00a0 Why does it happen?\u00a0 Because running makes you hungry!\u00a0 And while it takes on average one mile of running to burn 100 calories, it&#8217;s pretty easy to pop 100 calories into your mouth without thinking about it.<\/p>\n<p>I recently read an article in Runner&#8217;s World that talked about post-run indulgences.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t typically indulge after my mid-week runs, though I may eat more that day.\u00a0 I&#8217;m good about tracking my calories in My Fitness Pal during the week.\u00a0 But after my long run on the weekend, all bets are off.\u00a0 Runner&#8217;s World suggests only an indulgence of around 400 calories on the day of a long run and making sure to have something like eggs and a whole wheat English muffin right after the run to help with recovery and prevent over indulging.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, after my long runs, I like to go out for pancakes.\u00a0 My typical lunch is somewhere around 400-500 calories.\u00a0\u00a0 If I make this my indulgence, I&#8217;m interpreting RW&#8217;s rule to mean that I can then have up to 900 calories for lunch.\u00a0 SO MUCH FOOD!<\/p>\n<p>Except not really.\u00a0 After a recent 13 mile training run, we went to Denny&#8217;s.\u00a0 I had a Grand Slam with pancakes, sausage, hash browns, and scrambled eggs.\u00a0 970 calories.\u00a0 And let&#8217;s be honest, I continued to splurge throughout the day.\u00a0\u00a0 I clearly could have made better choices.\u00a0 Did I need hash browns AND pancakes?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Could I have gone with turkey bacon instead of sausage?\u00a0 Yes.<\/p>\n<p>But making those kinds of decisions can be tough.\u00a0 Especially when ravenous after a long run.\u00a0 Those bad for me foods just taste so incredibly good!<\/p>\n<p>Could I have had the meal and then just eaten normally the rest of the day?\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 But I know myself and that is easier said than done.<\/p>\n<p>So the goal is just to continue conscious eating.\u00a0 Look up calorie counts online before eating at a restaurant.\u00a0 Plan ahead.\u00a0 Splurge mindfully.\u00a0 And hopefully get rid of some of these stubborn pounds before the marathon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I took up running to lose weight.
