{"id":1970,"date":"2013-06-18T08:00:35","date_gmt":"2013-06-18T12:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=1970"},"modified":"2013-06-18T10:34:05","modified_gmt":"2013-06-18T14:34:05","slug":"trying-the-bike-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/18\/trying-the-bike-course\/","title":{"rendered":"Trying the Bike Course"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A local bike shop offers organized course rides on the Iron Girl Columbia course most weekends leading up to the race. \u00a0(They ride other courses throughout the year as well. \u00a0So now that I&#8217;ve got one tri under my belt, I decided it was time to check them out. \u00a0The course is a hilly 17+ miles, so I knew the ride would be a challenge, but I figured I had better just give it a shot and see what happened.\u00a0 I ride some hills in training around my house, but I knew this was going to be some much more extreme hills.<\/p>\n<p>I was not wrong.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.runningahead.com\/logs\/e0c353d439b04821a82d5511290858df\/workouts\/df42b3ea257e4a1b9554aa910235251a\/graphs?x=20&amp;y=30&amp;y1c=0000ff&amp;y2c=00ff00&amp;avg=1&amp;w=640&amp;h=480\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Powered by RunningAHEAD.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.runningahead.com\/logs\/e0c353d439b04821a82d5511290858df\/workouts\/df42b3ea257e4a1b9554aa910235251a\/graph?x=20&amp;y=30&amp;y1c=0000ff&amp;avg=1&amp;w=640&amp;h=480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>See those hills?\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 They were fun.<\/p>\n<p>The hill at mile 13 nearly took me out.\u00a0 My legs were tired and I just wasn&#8217;t sure I was going to make it up the hill.\u00a0 And then, as I was riding, I looked down and saw a note spray painted on the asphalt.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember what it said now, but it was something like &#8220;Keep going, you&#8217;ve got this!&#8221;\u00a0 And I took it to heart.<\/p>\n<p>(Edited to add &#8211; Kristin tells me this is the &#8220;Yes You Can&#8221; hill.)<\/p>\n<p>(This course is used by at least 2 local races, possibly 3, so all along the course, there were markings telling riders where to go.)<\/p>\n<p>Now, I realize that some of you experienced riders are looking at this elevation map and thinking &#8220;Well, that&#8217;s not so bad.&#8221;\u00a0 But for an inexperienced rider like me, it was tough!\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t pretty, but I made it through without walking up any hills.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we took a water break midway through (though I was drinking on the ride) and this was also with legs only a little tired from the previous day&#8217;s 5k, not with a body that had just been swimming for .62 miles, so this doesn&#8217;t make me feel extremely confident in my abilities in August.<\/p>\n<p>But it shows me that I can do it, and it shows me what I need to work on.\u00a0 I need to practice hills.\u00a0 I need to get better at my gears.\u00a0 I need to not be so freaked out when I&#8217;m flying down a hill at 30mph+ (dude, it is SCARY).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to ride with the group as many times as possible before my triathlon.\u00a0 Looking at my calendar and their schedule, I should be able to ride it 5 more times before race day.\u00a0 No better way to train!\u00a0 And of course, it was awesome to meet more people in the local triathlon community.\u00a0 It&#8217;s great to have so much support.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A local bike shop offers organized course rides on the Iron Girl Columbia course most weekends leading up to the race. \u00a0(They ride other courses throughout the year as well. \u00a0So now that I&#8217;ve got one tri under my belt, I decided it was time to check them out. \u00a0The course is a hilly 17+ [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_is_tweetstorm":false,"jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","enabled":false}}},"categories":[115],"tags":[],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.7 -
