{"id":2090,"date":"2013-07-12T08:00:08","date_gmt":"2013-07-12T12:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=2090"},"modified":"2013-07-09T16:55:03","modified_gmt":"2013-07-09T20:55:03","slug":"keepin-it-real","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/12\/keepin-it-real\/","title":{"rendered":"Keepin&#8217; It Real"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I read a lot of blogs.\u00a0 I talk to a lot of runners.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a pretty social sort.\u00a0 And I&#8217;ve noticed something lately.<\/p>\n<p>We all talk about our PRs (personal records) and our running goals and times.\u00a0 And many of us, myself included, feel the need to justify our &#8220;slow times.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The other day, I heard someone say &#8220;Man, you guys make me feel fast.\u00a0 My half marathon PR is a 2:12.\u00a0 I&#8217;m so slow!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First off, 2:12 isn&#8217;t slow.<\/p>\n<p>But secondly, and more importantly, <em>why do we feel the need to belittle our accomplishments<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m guilty of it myself.\u00a0 &#8220;My half marathon PR is only 2:48, <em>but I have a heart condition that I have to deal with so I&#8217;m probably not getting much faster.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s true that my heart condition does limit my pace (as do these extra 30 pounds, let&#8217;s be honest), WHO CARES?\u00a0 Why should I feel the need to justify my allegedly slow time?\u00a0 I ran a half marathon.\u00a0 I trained and my body carried me 13.1 miles in 2 hours and 48 minutes.\u00a0 That&#8217;s pretty awesome!<\/p>\n<p>And it doesn&#8217;t matter if it it took you 2:10 or 2:48 or 3:30 or 5 hours!\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t matter if you raced a 5K or a marathon.\u00a0 You finished a race.\u00a0 Maybe you ran, maybe you walked, maybe you sat down and cried mid-race before getting back up and continuing on, it doesn&#8217;t matter.\u00a0 You set out to do something great and you did it.<\/p>\n<p>And that is amazing.\u00a0 <strong>You. Are. Amazing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m always telling people to not belittle their accomplishments, and yet I do it to myself all the time.\u00a0 Somehow, I&#8217;m not good enough or I&#8217;m not fast enough or not <em>something<\/em> enough.<\/p>\n<p>I would never let my friends treat themselves like this.\u00a0 So why do I do it to myself?<\/p>\n<p>We need to keep it real.\u00a0 Own our accomplishments.\u00a0 Be proud of them.\u00a0 Shout them from the rooftops.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t compare to others.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t make excuses.\u00a0 Be yourself.\u00a0 <strong>Be amazing.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read a lot of blogs.\u00a0 I talk to a lot of runners.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a pretty social sort.\u00a0 And I&#8217;ve noticed something lately.
