{"id":2900,"date":"2014-07-21T11:17:15","date_gmt":"2014-07-21T15:17:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/?p=2900"},"modified":"2014-07-21T11:17:15","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T15:17:15","slug":"swimming-mental","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elbowglitter.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/21\/swimming-mental\/","title":{"rendered":"Swimming is 50% Mental"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday morning swims are one of the hardest workouts to motivate myself for.\u00a0 Not because of the swimming &#8211; I like swimming.\u00a0 But 1) it&#8217;s Monday and 2) it&#8217;s early.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s a good start to the week so I make a point to get there.\u00a0 Plus I don&#8217;t want to drown or get eaten by sharks come race day.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s workout started great.\u00a0 I actually ended up with my own lane for the first 15 minutes, which never happens.\u00a0 Someone joined me eventually, and that was fine.\u00a0 We just split the lane.\u00a0 He was swimming butterfly for some of his laps, but was conscious of where I was and would pull his arms in when we passed so I didn&#8217;t get punched.\u00a0 All good.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third guy asked to join the lane and we had to circle swim. Not a big deal except that I was a good deal slower than these guys.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t tell you how many times I got lapped.\u00a0 It was fine, really.\u00a0 The guys were more than polite about it.\u00a0 But it was really tough on my motivation.\u00a0 I really just wanted to quit.\u00a0 It was so demoralizing.\u00a0 I&#8217;m well aware that I&#8217;m not fast and I generally don&#8217;t care, but to have these guys swimming around me constantly was just tough.<\/p>\n<p>But I stuck it out.\u00a0 Conveniently, the third guy joined just as I was starting a tempo set, so the added speed was a good push.\u00a0 I was definitely feeling it by the end.\u00a0 And by the time I was ready for cool down, I was once again in the lane alone.\u00a0 So all in all, a good workout that I was feeling afterwards, but it was a mental struggle for sure.<\/p>\n<p>I just have to remember that it&#8217;s not about everyone else &#8211; it&#8217;s just about me.\u00a0 I&#8217;m doing this because I love to race and I want to improve myself.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not about anyone else but me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monday morning swims are one of the hardest workouts to
