Zombies are the new black.
Or something like that.
While I don’t like the actual idea of zombies, the idea of integrating zombie chases into my running sounded like fun. I’ve not tried a zombie-related 5K yet (let’s be honest – I would get eaten immediately), but I do still get my zombie fix while running.
Way back when, I backed a cool new app called Zombies, Run! on Kickstarter. The app was released earlier this year and I LOVE IT.
First off, it’s available for iPod, iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone 7, so this isn’t just an iOS thing. So keep reading.
What is it? Zombies, Run! is an app that you download on your phone to use while you’re running. I’d describe it as a cross between a motivational podcast and a radio show.
You are Runner 5. You are helping rebuild a base after the zombies invade. You’re also helping investigate just how this zombie apocalypse came to be. As you run, you’re picking up items and listening to the reports from the base as well as meeting people along the way.
And, if you chose to enable GPS, you occasionally get chased by zombies as well. It’s a little scary to have to outrun them. (But if you’re a treadmill runner, you can turn that part off.)
But wait! You like to run with music! No problem. This program works with your playlist so that you can listen to songs in between the reports. Or you can just have silence, which is admittedly much creepier.
I’ve only done a few of the missions, because I’m savoring the experience. I’m sure that when I go out on a 13 mile training run, I could get through three or four missions, but I limit myself. I also prefer to be chased by zombies, so this is an “only for outside running” treat. But it is highly recommended if you’re looking for some extra entertainment on your run.
