I have 65 days til my next race. 65 days! This is the longest running break I’ve had in I don’t know how long!
(Okay, so technically, I am running a 5K on Saturday, but that was not planned and I’m treating it as a training run and I blame Kelly for this.)
Some people live for the summer heat and love running in the warm weather.
I think those people are insane.
Of course, a lot of it has to do with how your body handles heat. Some people thrive in the warm weather, others wilt. I am part of the latter group. I love running in the cold weather. I don’t mind having to bundle up. I’ve gone for runs where my Nuun filled water bottles have started to turn to slush, and those remain some of my favorite training runs. (Of course, those are few and far between here in the mid-Atlantic – usually winter consists of 35 degree temps and rain, which is miserable for everyone.)
But put me outside in 90 degree weather for a run and I absolutely wilt.
Some of this has to do with my heart rate issues – my heart rate is higher in the hot weather, so it skyrockets that much faster. That means I have to slow down significantly. It’s not a coincidence that my best races all seem to happen between October and March.
(Unless they are in Florida. I don’t know how people live in Florida and manage to keep up with training.)
But to each his own. We all thrive in different environments, and that’s what makes running fun.
But don’t think that my weeks of no racing mean that I’m going to be taking it easy. I have a triathlon in August followed by a half marathon in September. I have to be trained for these races. But I’m going to do my best to focus my training and enjoy the fact that I really don’t have to worry about runs in the double digits until at least August. And I’m going to work on my open water swimming and my biking skills (my next tri has a hilly bike course) and just try to train smart.
And enjoy the fact that I don’t have to get up early to race for a few weeks.
You aren’t the only one! I think it’s insane too! I would much rather run in cool weather…
I agree. I was in Miami this past weekend and I was miserable the whole time. My body swells up like a blimp and I’m physically uncomfortable the whole time. I have no idea how I lived down there (and played sports!) for so long and survived! Enjoy the break and sleeping in!
