Okay, so that title is pretty much an inside joke, but when Kim and I travel, our trip hashtags tend to be #buyallthethings and #eatallthethings. Because really, what is a vacation without shopping and eating?
Of course, this theory goes well with racing. Except for me, right now, it’s #spendallthemoneys.
Racing is expensive. My new triathlon hobby especially so. I read somewhere recently that triathlon is the new golf because it’s a hobby for people with money. A high percentage of triathletes (Ironman level, I believe) make over $100,000 a year and that’s how they fund their hobby.
I’m not an Ironman, but I also don’t make over $100,000 a year. And I know plenty of triathletes who do distances from sprint to Ironman who also don’t make that kind of money.
But either way, the races get expensive.
The other night, I found myself getting talked into another triathlon. It’s driving distance, I had a place to stay, and it’s only two weeks after Iron Girl Columbia. Perfect, right? Well, it’s also the week before my half marathon, which probably isn’t the best for training. Also, it would cost $160 to register, plus hotel costs and food.
It was ultimately the money that helped me make the decision. I really can’t be spending $200+ on a weekend away when I have so many other big things coming up. Like a cruise! And a marathon trip! And saving for all of next year’s races!
So for now, the money is staying safely in my wallet. Maybe I’ll do that race next year.
My last blog post was all about the cost of races! I need to reel in my registration spending!
