One thing that I have noticed recently is the number of people complaining that now that it’s a new year, their gym is going to be super crowded with the New Year’s Resolutioners showing up, taking over all of the machines.  Thankfully, they’ll be gone by February.

This is the wrong attitude to have!

While I’m sure some of you reading grew up in a fit family where running or sports or athletics have been part of your life as long as you can remember, most of us made a conscious choice to get into running or biking or whatever we do.  And we were those newbies at the gym who weren’t sure what we were doing.

So reframe your attitude.  Instead of being annoyed at the new people at the gym, why not support them?  Offer a smile or tips on how to use a machine if they look confused.  Be welcoming.  Joke about how you remember your first time on that bike and how you couldn’t figure out the seat adjustment either.

Maybe you will be the reason they stick with it this year.

  1. Wow very interesting angle on the whole “gym in January gone in February” thing that happens every year. When we lived in the UK, Tom hated the gym in January because his morning routine was changed due to so many more people working out early in the morning. However, it never lasted more than a couple weeks, not even the whole month. But you are right, the newbies need to encouraged to come and we can certainly try new machines too!
